How the job will change
Most of an accounting team's day still goes on entering supplier invoices, matching them to orders and receipts, lettering customer accounts and reconciling bank statements. Document capture, automatic matching and agents that propose journal entries in the ERP already handle a large share of these flows. What is left for accountants are the exceptions: disputed invoices, unidentified payments, unusual transactions.
The job shifts from producing entries to controlling a largely automated chain. A good accountant tomorrow knows how to set matching rules, read an audit trail, justify a balance to the statutory auditors and spot the entry that looks plausible but is wrong. Depth in accounting standards and tax becomes more valuable as volume work disappears.
- 2026-2027
- Automated invoice capture and matching spread across accounts payable.
- 2028-2030
- Agents prepare most entries and reconciliations; teams handle exceptions and controls.
- 2031+
- Smaller teams centred on control, standards and closing quality.
Accounting clerk and junior accountant roles shrink first, yet today's chief accountants learnt their trade on those entries. Without a new training path, experienced closing and standards profiles will become hard to find. See the seniority outlook below.

How the numbers are built
Every headcount figure combines four assumptions. Three come pre-filled from public research and job family defaults. The strategic ceiling is yours to set.
Seniority outlook
A flow model with three levels of experience in the profession. Promotion and exit rates are set so that today's mix stays stable when hiring does not change: any gap you see comes from the junior hiring cut alone.
