Job skills

Growing in value

  • Supplier negotiation and relationship management
  • Supplier risk and resilience assessment
  • Total cost and should-cost analysis
  • Working with engineering on specifications

Losing value

  • Drafting tender documents from templates
  • Comparing quotes line by line
  • Creating and following up purchase orders
  • Manual spend analysis and classification

How the job will change

A buyer's week mixes tender preparation, quote comparison, purchase order follow-up and supplier meetings. AI now drafts requests for proposal from a template and a short brief, compares offers line by line, classifies spend in the ERP and monitors supplier news. Purchasing assistants and procure-to-pay staff see the biggest change, as low-value orders are increasingly placed by agents within set rules.

The negotiation itself, the relationship with a critical supplier and the arbitration between price, quality and supply risk stay with people. Buyers will be expected to cover more spend categories, bring better market intelligence to engineering and production, and anticipate supply disruptions. A good buyer tomorrow combines category expertise with the habit of checking what the analysis tools produce.

2026-2027
Assistants draft tenders and compare quotes; spend analysis gets automated.
2028-2030
Agents place low-value orders; each buyer covers more categories.
2031+
Procurement teams centred on negotiation, supplier risk and innovation sourcing.
Watch out

Automating tail spend without oversight is the main risk: agents ordering within rules nobody reviews can erode negotiated terms and compliance. Keeping procure-to-pay expertise in-house matters more than it appears. See the seniority outlook below.

How the numbers are built

Every headcount figure combines four assumptions. Three come pre-filled from public research and job family defaults. The strategic ceiling is yours to set.
