Job skills

Growing in value

  • Curating and editing generated design options
  • Knowledge of the house archive and codes
  • Material and craft know-how
  • Intellectual property awareness on generated visuals

Losing value

  • Producing colourway variations by hand
  • Building mood boards from image searches
  • Redrawing flat sketches for tech packs

How the job will change

Image generation and 3D tools let a studio produce mood boards, colourway variants and first renderings in hours instead of days. Assistants retrieve references from the house archive and turn a sketch into a clean flat for development. Choosing a direction, defending it and working the material remain with the designer.

The job puts more weight on editing and judgement: selecting among many generated options, holding the house codes, knowing what a material or a workshop can do. A good designer tomorrow will use generation tools to explore further and will be able to say why one proposal belongs to the house and another does not.

2026-2027
Generated mood boards and colourways used in early research phases.
2028-2030
3D and generation tools cut physical samples in early rounds.
2031+
Studios explore more, decide on fewer physical prototypes.
Watch out

Generated visuals raise unresolved intellectual property and originality questions. Studios need clear rules on what can be generated, from which sources, before scaling these tools. See the seniority outlook below.

How the numbers are built

Every headcount figure combines four assumptions. Three come pre-filled from public research and job family defaults. The strategic ceiling is yours to set.

Public researchExposureAverage automation potential of the job's tasks, from the ILO's 2025 task-level scores.
Your decisionStrategic ceilingHow much of that potential you choose to capture. Your decision, not ours.
Your companyAdoption speedHow fast your company moves, set once for the whole company.
