Job skills

Growing in value

  • Scientific dialogue with specialist physicians
  • Orchestrating omnichannel follow-up of prescribers
  • Account planning from territory data
  • Knowledge of local care pathways

Losing value

  • Manual visit reporting in the CRM
  • Tour planning and call targeting
  • Standard detailing of approved messages
  • Preparing territory sales reviews

How the job will change

A medical rep's week is built around visits, CRM call notes and tour planning drawn from targeting files. AI already writes the call reports, proposes which physicians to see and when, and suggests the next message in the approved sequence. Remote and email channels, driven by recommendation engines, take over part of the routine contacts that used to justify a field visit.

Field forces shrink and concentrate on specialists, hospital teams and launches, where a conversation with a physician cannot be replaced by an email. A good rep tomorrow knows the local care pathways, reads the territory data without waiting for the regional manager, and stays strictly within the approved claims when an assistant suggests a wording.

2026-2027
Automated call reports and AI-assisted targeting in the CRM.
2028-2030
Omnichannel engines plan contacts; field forces resized by specialty.
2031+
Smaller field teams focused on specialists, hospitals and launches.
Watch out

This family has already been through repeated field force reductions. A further cut risks losing the reps who hold relationships with key specialists, just before launches that need them. See the seniority outlook below.

How the numbers are built

Every headcount figure combines four assumptions. Three come pre-filled from public research and job family defaults. The strategic ceiling is yours to set.
