Job skills

Growing in value

  • Risk-taking judgement in stressed markets
  • Client relationships on complex trades
  • Designing and validating systematic strategies
  • Tailored structuring for institutional clients

Losing value

  • Writing morning market commentary
  • Manual pricing of standard flow products
  • Producing trade ideas and pitch decks
  • Answering routine client price requests

How the job will change

Flow trading was largely electronic well before generative AI. What changes now is the work around the trade: morning commentary, research summaries, pitch books, trade recaps and replies to client queries arrive pre-drafted. Sales teams receive trade ideas matched to each client's positions, and quoting on standard products is increasingly done by algorithms, with humans setting limits and parameters.

Value concentrates where judgement and relationships matter: illiquid or bespoke products, large block trades, stressed markets, structured solutions. Flow desks will be smaller, with more strats and engineers. A good front-office professional tomorrow can design or challenge a model, takes a risk decision when data are missing, and remains the person a client calls when markets turn.

2026-2027
Generated commentary, research summaries and pitch material; assistants on client messaging.
2028-2030
More pricing and client requests handled by algorithms and agents.
2031+
Lean flow desks; humans on complex risk, structuring and major clients.
Watch out

Front office competes with tech firms for people who combine market sense and engineering. These hybrid profiles are scarce, and the junior seats where traders used to learn are being cut. See the seniority outlook below.

What if you hired fewer juniors?

How the numbers are built

Every headcount figure combines four assumptions. Three come pre-filled from public research and job family defaults. The strategic ceiling is yours to set.

Public researchExposureAverage automation potential of the job's tasks, from the ILO's 2025 task-level scores.
Your decisionStrategic ceilingHow much of that potential you choose to capture. Your decision, not ours.
