How the job will change
Salespeople spend a large share of their time away from customers: researching accounts, preparing meetings, writing proposals and follow-up emails, updating the CRM and forecasting their pipeline. Assistants now prepare account briefs, draft proposals from templates, log meeting notes and flag deals at risk. Inside sales and prospecting roles change the most, as agents take on part of first-level outreach and qualification.
Time with customers becomes the main use of the hours saved. Buyers also use AI to compare offers, so they arrive better informed and expect a salesperson who brings insight on their own business. A good account manager tomorrow understands how the client makes decisions, builds a business case with them and negotiates complex deals across several stakeholders.
- 2026-2027
- Assistants prepare meetings, draft proposals and update the CRM.
- 2028-2030
- Agents handle first-level prospecting and lead qualification.
- 2031+
- Fewer inside sales roles, more senior key account managers.
Inside sales and business developer roles are the usual entry point into sales careers. If agents take over prospecting, companies will need another way to train future key account managers. See the seniority outlook below.

How the numbers are built
Every headcount figure combines four assumptions. Three come pre-filled from public research and job family defaults. The strategic ceiling is yours to set.
Seniority outlook
A flow model with three levels of experience in the profession. Promotion and exit rates are set so that today's mix stays stable when hiring does not change: any gap you see comes from the junior hiring cut alone.
