How the job will change
A field sales engineer's week mixes visits to installers, panel builders and consulting engineers with a heavy administrative load: visit reports, CRM updates, standard quotes, product searches. AI now writes the visit report from a voice note, prepares the account history before a meeting, suggests which customers to visit and drafts quotes for standard references. Administration shrinks, while the visits themselves stay the same.
The job moves towards earlier influence on projects, when consulting engineers and architects write the specification, and towards selling energy management and connected offers that need more explanation. A good field salesperson tomorrow will know the local network of installers and specifiers better than anyone, and will use account data to choose where to spend limited time.
- 2026-2027
- Visit reports, CRM updates and standard quotes largely automated.
- 2028-2030
- AI suggests visit priorities and prepares account plans from sales data.
- 2031+
- More time in the field, sales territories resized to demand.
The exposure figure mostly reflects administrative tasks; relationships with installers are hard to automate. Cutting field headcount on the basis of AI gains risks losing specifications to competitors, which only shows years later. See the seniority outlook below.

How the numbers are built
Every headcount figure combines four assumptions. Three come pre-filled from public research and job family defaults. The strategic ceiling is yours to set.
Seniority outlook
A flow model with three levels of experience in the profession. Promotion and exit rates are set so that today's mix stays stable when hiring does not change: any gap you see comes from the junior hiring cut alone.
